Probate applications in the UK

If you are an Executor or Administrator of a Deceased’s Estate and are applying for Probate, without using a firm of solicitors, then you will need to complete a Probate Application Form which is known as a PA1 Form. A copy of the form and notes as to how to complete the form can be found on the Government website at the following link: www.hmctsformfinder.justice.gov.uk. The current Form PA1 was last modified in April 2011 however the guidance notes are dated December 2008 but both are still applicable as at March 2015.

Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs have a very good Probate and Inheritance Tax helpline 0300 123 1072  which is available from 0900hrs to 1700hrs on weekdays however be prepared to be on hold for a little while.

The Probate Application is basically to establish who the Executors or Administrators are and the family members of the Deceased which is especially important when the Deceased did not leave a Will. The Law Society is also a good reference point and the following link outlines the difference www.lawsociety.org.uk/for-the-public/common-legal-issues/probate/
